On 20 July 2006, Colin James of the Adelaide Advertiser reported that Dr Cala was facing a formal disciplinary hearing over allegations he wrongly blamed a car accident for the deaths of a murdered couple. The report said that Dr Allan Cala, formerly of Sydney, had been referred to the Professional Standards Committee of the NSW Medical Board for alleged unsatisfactory professional conduct.

Colin James said that the committee had the power to recommend the de-registration of medical practitioners, issue formal cautions and reprimands, order training, place restrictions on medical practices or impose fines. He said it also can refer serious cases to a medical tribunal which can suspend or de-register medical practitioners.

According to James' report, the committee’s inquiry follows a preliminary investigation by the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission into allegations Dr Cala wrongly blamed the deaths in 2000 of Sydney couple Bill and Pamela Weightman on a car accident when they had been murdered by their adopted son and an accomplice.
