Networked Knowledge - Media Report[This edited version of the report has been prepared by Dr Robert N Moles]
Dr Cala homepage On 23 June 2004, Melissa King of the Adelaide Advertiser reported that a heavy workload at the Forensic Science Centre had forced the State Government to provide an extra $3.1 million for new staff. The new money, she said was to be provided over four years to fund six new positions, including two pathologists. The number of post mortem examinations has increased from about 950 in 2002 to about 1200 last year. A similar number was expected this year. She said that The Advertiser had revealed the previous month that the rising workload had resulted in chief forensic pathologist Dr Allan Cala resigning from the position in May. She said he had stepped down from the administrative role but remained as one of the centre’s three pathologists. Coroner Wayne Chivell said at the time that he was not concerned about the quality of work being affected by increased workloads, but there had been delays in reports being completed. Administrative Services Minister Michael Wright yesterday said a registrar (trainee pathologist) had already started and a specialist pathologist position would soon be created.
